The Devil Wears Prada
A few people have asked me why I liked The Devil Wears Prada. Here are some reasons why I think it's good movie (warning, possible spoilers ahead):1) Good entertainment value - all this fashion stuff may be a bit overwhelming for a guy with little or no fashion sense--like me--but it's still pretty cool to watch. The movie also made me laugh pretty consistently throughout.
2) Good acting - Meryl Streep's performance is phenomenal. Some would even say that she carried the whole movie. I love how she always finishes off her half-dozen verbose demands with a non-chalant "that's all," which essentially means "only a few simple requests; now shut up and go away." Trivia: in preparing for her role in Music of the Heart, Meryl Streep learned to play the violin in only eight weeks by practicing six hours a day everyday. Aside: having played the violin for almost fifteen years, I still think the instrument is extremely hard to play and can't imagine anyone learning it in eight weeks.
3) Good story - the movie is based on a novel. Some said that the movie did not represent the novel well. Since I haven't read the novel, I don't particularly mind. :) The gist of the story asks the simple question: how far is one willing to go and willing to give up in order to advance one's career and get rich? Is one willing to give up his lifestyle, friendships, relationship, time, beliefs, and even life itself? Also good: how many does one have to give up before realizing that one has gone down the wrong path? These are good questions to ask.
4) Good character development - both of the two main characters are fairly well-rounded. Even Meryl Streep's character showed a side contrasting her usual "dragon woman" portrayal at one point in the movie.
One more thought: I think the movie is a little on the long side. There is this feeling of "let's try to fit in as much fashion stuff as possible," but given that the humor is always there to offset the possible feeling of fashion overload and boredom, I didn't really mind.

hey hanlin, good thoughts. and umm... it's good that they lengthen the movie for the fashion... because us women love it! i won't enjoy it as much if it wasn't for all the runways and fashion "stuff" as you called it! =P
